Bushfire Resistance: How Our Modular Homes Withstand Extreme Conditions

Though beautiful, Tasmania’s environment can be harsh and unforgiving. A combination of climate, vegetation, and fuel load means that approximately 98% of Tasmania’s land area is bush-fire prone.

We recognise the importance of designing and building modular homes that are fire-resistant to protect both the home you love, and the environment.

Modular Homes Built for Challenging Environments

Ernest Cutler Construction’s modular homes are purpose-built for Tasmanian conditions.

They are efficient, comfortable, and self-sustainable, but also durable and practical, offering protection against potential bush-fire attacks.

Our modular homes are constructed from fire-resistant materials and smart construction techniques that offer peace of mind in even the most challenging environments.

Though our homes are small in size, they are big on performance and are durable. We use a range of techniques to make our homes fire-resistant, including:

  • PVC double-glazed windows: minimises the risk of glass breaking under extreme heat
  • Colour bond cladding: made from non-combustible steel to act as a durable barrier against radiant heat
  • High-performance windows and doors: engineered to resist ember attack and withstand high levels of radiant heat

BAL Standards

The Bushfire Attack Level (BAL) is an Australian Government standard that measures the potential for your home to be exposed to bush fire attack. At Ernest Cutler Constructions, the safety of our clients is most important to us.

When it comes to designing and constructing our modular homes, our focus does not just revolve around its premium finish or aesthetic elements.

BAL 40 Rating

We follow fire ratings to a high standard, building our homes to a BAL rating of 40. This rating is the second-highest BAL rating, indicating locations with a very high risk of bush fire.

When planning the location of a modular home, we carefully assess the surrounding environment and any potential bushfire risks. This might particularly apply to more rural and isolated areas in greater Hobart.

Where risks exist, we take the necessary measures to ensure your modular home is built to be fire-resistant.

Fire-Resistance and Sustainability: How the Two Go Hand in Hand

Our modular homes are purpose-built for Tasmanian conditions and crafted with sustainability in mind, bringing together efficiency, speed, and affordability.

In addition to providing robust protection against bushfire attacks, our smart construction methods and materials reduce energy use and deliver comfortable living all year round.

That means for sustainable living and less damage to the environment, during all seasons.

Speak to the Experts

Building modular homes that meet both European standards and Tasmanian bushfire requirements creates smarter, more resilient living in one of Australia’s most beautiful yet challenging environments.

Given Tasmania’s high bushfire risk, it’s essential to understand the dangers and know how to respond during a bushfire event. For more information, visit:https://bushfire.tas.gov.au/
